Text Festival, 2011

Welcome to the Text Festival.

The Text Festival in Bury is an internationally recognised event investigating contemporary language art (poetry, text art, sound and media text, live art). Opening on 29 April 2011, the next Festival will be its third manifestation and run into July.

Against the background of global stylistic multiplicity, the use of language spans many artforms and may even be a unifying field of enquiry, a new definition and a new field of international linguistic art practice and dialogue. The Bury Festival is the leading focus of language in 21st Century art.

The Festival specialises in experiments, in new experiences, in performances and exhibitions that mix artforms in ground-breaking combinations that challenge traditional language art boundaries and offer artists a forum for dialogue and exchange of ideas.

Das kalte Herz
Eine musikalische Performance über Geld, Macht und andere Potenzen

A: Ach, endlich mal wieder ohne schlechtes Gewissen Champagner trinken...
B: Es lebe das Kapital! Prost!

International Surrealist Declaration for the Imprisoned Serbian Anarchosyndicalists

We hereby declare our unconditional solidarity with the five Serbian anarcho-syndicalists who have been imprisoned since September the 4th, facing the charge of “international terrorism.” Tadej Kurep, Ivan Vulović, Sanja Dojkić, Ratibor Trivunac and Nikola Mitrović, all members of Sindikalna konfederacija Anarho-sindikalistička inicijativa (ASI), were arrested some days after an action of solidarity with the Greek activist, and then-hunger striker, Thodoris Iliopoulos. The target of this action was the Greek embassy in Belgrade.

The Serbian authorities used the slight damages caused to the building of the Greek embassy as a pretext in order to exercise their repressive powers, labeling the members of ASI as “terrorist” and detaining them with no substantial evidence of their actual involvement in this so-called crime of damaging the façade of a building. It is not the building, of course, that concerns the Serbian police; neither is it the symbolism, per se, of an attack against the embassy of another state: the real impact of international solidarity and radical politics, with a view towards social emancipation, is what makes them transgress the limits of their supposed democracy, so as to imprison militants through farcical procedures.

Ratibor Trivunac, one of the accused, is a friend of the international surrealist movement. But surrealism is not an exclusive club of personal relations, any more than it is one of mere aesthetic affinities. We consider as our brothers all these five persecuted Serbian militants (and the sixth, Ivan Savic, who was arrested some days later) because their cause, their choice to live and to struggle for another, liberated life, is one that we share. When a state lays its oppressive hand upon one of us, we must all feel the threat to our freedom, we must all take a stand with those who risk being deprived of their elementary freedoms because they are determined to fight, here and now, for real universal freedom.

We demand the immediate release of our five comrades and friends!
The passion for freedom is stronger than any of your prisons!

Aktuelle Architektur der Kultur

Aktuelle Architektur der Kultur

Aktuelle Architektur der Kultur refers to a concept, in constant adjustment and formation, of works constructed and projected by a group of artists that share a vision to create a structure that support their ultimate needs but also uphold working relations with others. This is AADK is interested in creating a network that can self-generate. During April in various places AADK will be presented to the public. Using the vertebrate eye – the corresponding visual or light-detecting organ, as a figurative explanation for what is proposed. Aktuelle Architektur der Kultur represents vision, sight; Backdoor the transparent cornea; Bridge on a Wall the sensitive retina lining the back of the eye; Force Quit the adjustable iris and Stupid Green the lens for focusing. BACK DOOR, January 2009, began with the desire of bringing into the gallery space atmospheres related with nightclubing stereotypes (party, dj, …) using installations and happenings that are then activated by the partygoers. BRIDGE ON A WALL, collaboration between Abraham Hurtado / Vania Rovisco. Two performing artists with different aesthetics, asking own questions, research Live installation – the installed body, its’ occupation in time and space. Since 2008 have presented various works in Gallery Tristese deluxe, Berlin. FORCE QUIT a platform through which independent projects are presented. Open to the members of AADK and to any artists in need of an association, kind of freelancing structure that supports independent works. Soundscapes 3 project of Jochen Arbeit is in this frame. STUPID GREEN, collaboration between Jochen Arbeit / Vania Rovisco. Interdisciplinary, international in Berlin based project that began in 2006, create a platform for transporting processes, colliding music and performance. Have presented various works in Berlin, Lisbon and Belgium. MASKS Metamorphoses of the Face from Rodin to Picasso

Exhibition Building Mathildenhöhe
March 8 through June 7, 2009

An international themed exhibition staged in cooperation with Musée d’Orsay, Paris and NY Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen

Preview and masked ball: Saturday March 7, 2009 from 6.30 p.m.

Because it discloses through disguise and disguises by disclosing, the mask touches the very roots of mankind and life itself. While in the cultures of antiquity it was of major importance as a cult object and a theater requisite since the mid-19th century the mask experienced a remarkable renaissance in Europe: Its »disconcerting strangeness« is experienced as extraordinary enrichment and aesthetic revival. The suggestive power of masks – with its capacity to reflect the whole individual or even create him anew – inspired numerous artists, sculptors and photographers about 1900.

“A mask tells us more than a face” Oscar Wilde

To Bring Into Being

Music composed & performed by Klimchak for a dance choreographed & performed by Lori Teague. This was recorded during dress rehearsal on 2/22/09 for the Evolution Project at Emory University. Camera work is by Anne Cox.

The music is performed on a home-built musical desk, which has marimba bars built into the top, a water-filled PVC pencil holder for gliss effects & an amplified aquarium in one of the drawers. All of these are run through a looper pedal & various guitar effects.
