Mopomoso at the Vortex. Sunday 20th September.
The Best of free improvised music.

Vultures - Anthony Donovan - electronics and prepared zither, Matt Chilton - Laptop, Dan Beattie -Guitar, Will Connor - Percussion and objects. Mixing free improvisation and dark ambient drone-based music with home-made instruments and electro/acoustics, Vultures music is further enhanced by the live manipulation of the resulting sounds. Building ever-changing layers, they create an aural tapestry of great depth and richness.

The Messy Anne Trio Steve Beresford - Piano, Javier Carmona - Drums and percussion, Dave Tucker - Bass.Ex-Fall guitarist and mainstay of the London Improvisers Orchestra, Dave Tucker here takes up his other love, the bass, in a recently formed trio with two of the leading figures from the London improvised music scene. Steve Beresford’s adroit and intelligent piano playing matched with Javier Carmona’s inventive percussion work make up a constantly intriguing trio of rare melodic invention.

John Butcher - Saxophone, Pascal Marzan - Guitar. John Butcher is world renowned for the scope and inventiveness of his saxophone playing and French guitarist Pascal Marzan is a leading exponent of the nylon strung classical guitar in the improvising world. Surprisingly they have never played together before and this, their debut outing, is something of a coup for us. Two great musicians and a blank canvas.

John Russell - Guitar, Peter Urpeth - Piano, Phil Wachsmann - violin. In the 1980s and 1990s Peter Urpeth worked with Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, John Russell and with the group Makeshift. After moving to the Outer Hebrides to concentrate on his work as a poet and novelist he has recently returned to live playing. Most recently touring in Europe he has put this trio together with long-term associate Russell and the amazing violinist Phil Wachsmann. As Peter says of his partners, “I find myself very much drawn to the control, economy and precision of their improvisation, this is precious and detailed music, and with Phil there is also always that sense of narrative. I am greatly looking forward to the performance."
